This week we talk to Peter Freed, the King West developer and the man behind FREED Developments.
What does a typical day look like for you?
6am to 4pm full of work related events, including on most days, meetings with banks, partners, city officials, etc. After 4 pm it’s all about spending time with my family.
What was your first building project?
I caught the building bug pretty early in life. It started with a little wooden fort in my parent’s backyard.
What’s the next big project in the pipe-line?
I have focused my attention in the King West area over the past several years and still see more potential. You will have to wait and see but I will leave it at – a large King West residential Project.
How important is the consideration of design in new buildings?
Absolutely critical. These buildings will be around for years and years to come. It is a huge part of the development process.
A place in Toronto you’d be proud to take people to:
550 Wellington Street West! It will be the hub and epicenter to Central King West. An urban playground for local business and local residents alike to enjoy and use.
What do you see as Toronto’s next great neighbourhood?
Well seeing as how I have concentrated on this area over the past 6+ years, it would have to be the King West or as I like to more accurately call it the Central King West area. There is a great energy here and you really have it all, or at least you will when the Thompson opens next month.
A Toronto resident who’s making a positive impact on the city:
Councillor Adam Vaughan – he has really done an amazing job of not only encouraging growth but showing a concern for design, the environment, the growth of Toronto and families.
What will King West look like in another 5 years?
A world class neighborhood with a dynamic energy, culture and vibe. The potential is really unlimited given our downtown and central location but also our proximity to areas like the financial district and the island airport.
This week’s person to know is Tony Cohen (GEI), the man behind Le Germain Toronto who has now partnered with Peter Freed for the new Thompson Toronto Hotel.
